The Energy Employees Occupation Illness Compensation Program Act covers certain illnesses as determined by the act that are or could be the result of working at nuclear power plants or atomic weapons plants or by living in areas close to nuclear weapons plants.
Some of the EEOICPA covered illnesses include:
Radiation-induced cancers. Depending on where you worked or lived, and on how long you were exposed to radiation, these types of cancers could include: bone, renal, leukemia, lung, multiple myeloma, certain types of lymphoma, bile duct, brain, breast (in males and females), colon, esophagus, gall bladder, liver, ovary, pancreas, pharynx, salivary glands, small intestine, stomach, thyroid and bladder cancers.
Chronic Beryllium Disease. Chronic Beryllium Disease (often called CBD) is a progressive loss of lung function as a result of inhaling beryllium dust particles or fumes. The particles cause non-caseating granulomas to form in the lungs, inhibiting normal lung function.
Chronic Silicosis. Chronic Silicosis is caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust and can be characterized by cough, fever and/or shortness of breath.
Beryllium Sensitivity. Beryllium Sensitivity is an immune system allergic reaction to the presence of beryllium in the body as a result of inhaling beryllium dust particles or fumes.

What is an Impairment Rating? Impairment is a decrease in the functioning of a body part or organ as it affects the whole body, as a result of the illness. An impairment rating is performed once the claimant has reached Maximum Medical Improvement (i.e. the condition is stabilized and is unlikely to improve with additional medical treatment). For more information on Impairment Rating, click here and look under “Part E” benefits.
What is Special Exposure Cohort (SEC)? The Special Exposure Cohort (SEC) is a uniquely defined category of employees established under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Act, or EEOICPA. For more information on SEC, click here.
